Obituary for Martha "Marty" Cecile Glenn

Martha (Marty) Cecile Glenn, 83, of Lakeland, went to her heavenly home on December 31, 2018. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend. She is dearly loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Mrs. Glenn was born October 17, 1935 in Bowling Green, KY. Her father worked for Woodmen of the World Life Insurance and because of this position, the family moved to Martinsville, IN for Martha’s senior year in high school. After visiting her aunt in Lakeland over the years, Mrs. Glenn chose to attend Florida Southern College and graduated in December 1957 earning a BA in Religious Education with co-minors in Sociology and Psychology. During the summers of 1954 and 1955, she was an FSC Delegate to Cuba where she was named the Director and Coordinator of the summer youth programs for the Methodist Mission in Holguin, Oriente Province and Havana, Cuba. She led Sunday school classes, played the piano, and assisted volunteer doctors in the local dispensary where British West Indies children from low-income families came for medical care. The experiences she had in Cuba were ones she would hold dear for the rest of her life. In 1956, she was nominated and placed in the book Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges due to her outstanding scholastic achievements as well as her contributions to both the community and school. Mrs. Glenn was also an FSC Delegate to Lake Junaluska, a member of Sigma Rho Epsilon Honorary Fraternity, and a runner up in the Miss Southern contest.

After graduation, Mrs. Glenn held various positions in Religious Education at Methodist Churches in Greenville, AL and Lake Wales, FL; was a Social Service Supervisor for the state of Kentucky; and later held administrative positions in Lakeland with Ed Tarver State Farm Insurance and Watson Clinic. She was the former chairwoman of the Scholarship Committee of the American Business Women’s Association, Lakeland Chapter.

Mrs. Glenn met her husband Curtis in 1957 at Doc’s Drive In in Lake Wales, FL. Along with their young son Marcus, born in 1958, the Glenns moved to Kentucky in 1962, returning to Florida in 1965 where they welcomed their daughter Denise three months later and in 1967, their youngest child Greg joined the family. Mrs. Glenn was politically active, enjoyed watching Buccaneer football, and often traveled to spend time with each of her children.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Lakeland, FL and enjoyed attending services at The Episcopal Cathedral Church of Saint Peter in St Petersburg, FL.

Mrs. Glenn was preceded in death by her beloved husband Curtis Perry Glenn to whom she was married nearly 59 years at the time of his death, her parents Evan Cecile and Martha Alice (Head) Evans. her sister Mercil Merle (Evans) Mayhew, and her brother Evan Cecile Evans, Jr.

She is survived by her three children, Marcus Elgin Glenn (Meg) of Ellicott City, MD, daughter Martha Denise (Glenn) Ray (Greg) of Murfreesboro, TN, son Gregory Paul Glenn (Anna) of St. Petersburg, FL; three grandchildren, Lisa Marie Glenn of Seattle, WA, Christopher Perry Glenn of Arlington, VA, and Levi Glenn of St Petersburg, FL; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive visitors at Heath Funeral Chapel on Saturday, January 12th at 11:00am followed by funeral services at 12:00pm with interment immediately following at Lakeland Memorial Gardens.
