David Arthur Pipkin, age 79, went to be with the Lord at his home in Lakeland, Florida on Monday, June 8, 2026 surrounded by his family. He was born in Arcadia, Florida, where he lived with his parents, Thomas Julian (T.J.) Pipkin and Alison Pickard Pipkin, until graduating from Desota County High School in 1965. David attended college in Lakeland, Florida and served in the Army, obtaining the rank of Sargent before being Honorably Discharged in 1972. After the Army he worked at Myrick’s Men’s Store for 13 years in Downtown Lakeland, where he later served as manager. After his tenure at Myrick’s, David joined his family at Pickard & Pickard Realtors as an Associate in 1985.
David is survived by his wife of 44 years, Nancy Wheeler Pipkin, their son Andrew David Pipkin (Brittney), daughter Leslie Pipkin Smith (Nicholas), grandchildren, Kelly Kate Pipkin, Warner Smith, Hamp Pipkin, and Dottie Smith. He is also survived by his sisters, Marlow Scott, Marguerite Hankins (Tom); brother, Paul Pipkin (Barbara); along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
David’s love for Lakeland was cemented through his deep generational family ties to this city, which only grew stronger as he became an active member within several community groups, such as the Downtown Promotions Association, where he served as President, the Sertoma Club, the Lakeland Downtown Development Association, and the Lakeland Historic Preservation Board. His commitment to the growth and vitality of a thriving downtown Lakeland was evident when he helped secure the Lakeland Children’s Museum’s first location on Kentucky Avenue, believing in the importance of creating spaces that would enrich the lives of local families for generations to come.
He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather whose joyful spirit and constant smile brought warmth to everyone around him, always offering encouragement and unconditional love. Family was at the center of his life. Whether cheering from the sidelines at games and school events or offering a helping hand when needed, he showed up wholeheartedly for his family in every way. He lived a life worth celebrating and will surely be missed.
The family would like to thank the staff of Good Shepard Hospice, especially Cinthia, Peggy and Maggalie. We can’t thank them enough for the care of David and support they provided during this time with us.
