John William “Bill” Herchig, Sr., 81, passed away peacefully at home on May 5th, 2026.
Bill was born on September 15, 1944, in Dayton, Ohio to Julius and Freda Herchig. After serving in the Navy, he earned his Master's in Social Work degree from Florida State University. He dedicated his career in social work to supporting individuals facing mental health and substance mis-use challenges. After a life-altering health event in 2000 that ended his professional career, he continued his commitment to service by volunteering in the community, spending ten meaningful years with Good Shepherd Hospice.
Bill is survived by his wife of 47 years, Diana. The two shared a devoted marriage, and she remained by his side through every joy and challenge. Together, they built a home filled with love, laughter, and a steady diet of Jimmy Buffett, whose music became the soundtrack to their marriage.
He is also survived by his four children: Holly Fields (Ricky) of Jacksonville, FL; Heidi Jensen (Tom) of St. Augustine, FL; John Herchig (Tabitha) of Augusta, GA; and Ryan Herchig of Huntsville, AL. In addition, he leaves behind seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Bill will be remembered for his kindness and quick-witted humor, as well as his positive outlook on life despite the health challenges, he faced.
A celebration of Bill’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 30, at Heath Funeral Chapel, 328 S. Ingraham Ave., Lakeland, FL 33801. Family and friends are invited to gather, share memories, and honor the life of a man who gave so much of himself to his family and community. We encourage people to wear bright colors, reflecting his positive outlook on life.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to his caregivers, friends and neighbors who offered support over the years. If you wish to make a charitable donation in Bill’s memory, we offer the following suggestions, or a charity of your choice.
