Luis Enrique Carrillo passed away peacefully on November 25, 2024, surrounded by his loving family after a short illness.
Born on October 7, 1932, in Barrancas, Colombia, Luis was the son of Carlos and Filomena Carrillo. Overcoming the circumstances he was born in, he went out on his own at the age of 14. After earning a college degree from the University of Antioquia in Medellín, he pursued a medical degree at the University of Brazil in Rio De Janeiro. While attending medical school, he met the love of his life, Wilma Correira Cruz; they married in 1960.
Following their wedding, the couple lived in Maracaibo, Venezuela, where Luis began practicing medicine at the Public Health Department. The family soon grew with the births of their children in 1961 with Luis, followed by Carlos and Claudia. Seeking adventure and new opportunities, the family immigrated to Syracuse, NY, where Luis interned at the St. Barnabas Medical Center. Luis began his residency at the Upstate Medical Center at the University of New York. Then Luis took a fellowship at the Community Hospital in Syracuse, where he completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology. During that time Sandra was born and the family was complete.
A warmer climate drew the Carrillo family to Lakeland, Florida, their forever home. Luis achieved his dream of practicing obstetrics and gynecology there, initially in private practice and later with Clark & Daugherty Medical Group. During his 50-year career, he delivered hundreds of babies. Many patients and staff often expressed admiration for his compassion, dedication, and the profound impact he made. He found great joy every time he delivered a baby into this world, it truly was his calling. Medicine was more than a profession for Luis; it was a passion.
Outside of work, soccer, football, and boxing brought him joy, along with an affinity for Championship Wrestling. Power walks through the neighborhood were a favorite of his, which transitioned to time on the treadmill, often paired with catching up on the news. The Carrillo home was always a party, where he and Wilma welcomed all. Music, especially “vallenatos” were a source of happiness, often leading to cherished moments on the dance floor with Wilma.
Luis had a calm wisdom, kindness, and strength that was a model for all. He was a brilliant and giving man who left his mark on many.
His children carry on his legacy: Luis Eduardo Carrillo (Patricia), Carlos Enrique Carrillo (Angele), Claudia Carrillo Hudson (Robert), and Sandra Campisi (Sal); his grandchildren, Everett Hamilton (Alexis), Olivia Hamilton, Sal Campisi III, Tomas Carrillo, Grace Campisi, and Isabel Carrillo; and his companion, Patricia Meland. Many extended family members and friends will also remember him fondly.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Wilma.
A memorial service celebrating Luis’s life will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, November 30, 2024, at Heath Funeral Chapel. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your favorite charity.
