Marjorie Gwendolyn (Gwen) Comer of Greensboro, NC passed away peacefully at the age of 88 on April 11, 2026 following a brief hospitalization in Lakeland, FL. Gwen was born on July 17, 1937 in Ulah, NC, the oldest daughter of Joseph Peele Maness and Marjorie Morrison Maness. She graduated from Thomasville High School and Ashmore Business College.
Gwen met her husband Ray McFayden Comer on a blind date in 1954, and that first encounter blossomed into a love that spanned more than 70 years. In 1956, Gwen and Ray were married and soon thereafter moved to Anchorage, AK. She worked for the U.S. Army as a civilian employee while Ray was stationed in Anchorage. They made lifelong friends in Alaska and undertook many adventures. After Alaska, Gwen and Ray moved to Guilford County, NC where they began their family. Gwen worked as an executive secretary at Foremost Screen Printing. After all her children were in school, she began working at Northwest Guilford High School, first in the administrative offices and later as a Media Assistant in the library.
Gwen had a strong commitment to community service and was an active member of Stokesdale United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She loved all forms of music and one of her great joys was singing in the church choir. She also held numerous positions within the Masonic Order of the Eastern Star.
Gwen had a great sense of adventure and after retirement, she loved traveling with Ray, managing to visit all 50 states and several other countries in North America and Europe. She had a deep love of nature, gardening, sitting on her porch reading, and taking long rides in the country, enjoying the “lay of the land”. Gwen was an avid, life-long reader and imparted that passion to her children. Her family was the most important part of her life, and she loved spending time with her family, including her grandchildren and great-grandson. Throughout her life, she displayed a remarkable kindness, quick wit, and playful sense of humor that enabled her to develop many strong and wonderful friendships.
Gwen was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Marjorie Maness, her husband Ray Comer, and her sister, Hilda Maness. She is survived by her three children, Linda Comer (Craig McIntosh), Allen Comer (Tracy), and Laura Comer (Bob Sides), her sister Lucy Warner, her two grandchildren Michael Smith (Mia Gregory), Catherine Leneave (Stuart), and her great-grandson Liam Leneave.
A service honoring and celebrating Gwen’s life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, May 30 at Stokesdale United Methodist Church in Stokesdale, NC, and the family will greet friends afterwards. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Stokesdale United Methodist Church Building Fund.
