It is with deep sadness and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Thomas W. Higgins, who entered the loving arms of his Savior on December 27, 2024, at the age of 77. Born on June 26, 1947, to Ted and Marge Higgins (both deceased), Tom’s life was marked by a steadfast faith in God, a deep love for his family, and a commitment to living with integrity and compassion.
Tom is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Sarah E. (Richardson) Higgins. Together, they built a life full of love, laughter, and shared faith, serving as a beacon of hope and devotion to those who knew them. He was a proud father to his son, Jeffrey T. Higgins (Amy) of San Antonio, TX, and his daughter, Meredith Henderson (Josh) of Lakeland, FL. Tom’s legacy of love extends to his grandchildren, Holly Latimer (July), Reid Higgins, Ryan Higgins, Kyle Henderson and Caleb Henderson, all of whom brought him great joy in his later years.
Tom was also deeply loved by his two sisters, Pat Vani (Tom) and Peg Napper, both of Denver, CO, along with a host of extended family members and friends.
Raised primarily in Dallas, Texas, Tom graduated from Dallas Jesuit High School in 1965, where he earned recognition not only for his academic accomplishments but also for his athletic prowess and was later inducted into the Rangers Sports Hall of Fame for his achievements. His passion for football led him to the University of Texas at Austin, where he played under the legendary Longhorn Coach Darrell Royal. After earning a bachelor’s degree in English in 1969, Tom answered the call to serve his country, becoming an officer in the United States Marine Corps. He served with distinction, completing foreign deployments in both Vietnam and Thailand, and his service was a source of pride throughout his life.
Following his military service, Tom embarked on a successful career in the hospitality industry. He worked with major restaurant firms Steak & Ale and Ireland’s and spent many years in various leadership roles with LaQuinta Inns in San Antonio, Texas. His leadership extended to executive roles as CEO of Santikos Theaters in San Antonio and for the renowned hotel chains Days Inn in Parsippany, New Jersey and Best Western International, in Phoenix, Arizona. He finished his career as CEO of Providence Place, a senior living community in High Point, NC before retiring close to family in Lakeland, Florida. His contributions helped shape the future of these respective organizations, while positively impacting those he worked alongside and mentored.
Tom spent his life reflecting the love of Christ in all that he did, whether in his career, in his church, or in his weekly interactions with his golf buddies at Sonterra Country Club in San Antonio. His warm smile, encouraging words, and humble spirit will be missed by all who knew him. As we mourn his passing, we find comfort in the words of Scripture, knowing that he has received the eternal reward promised to all who trust in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.
A memorial service and interment is planned for later this Spring at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.
Rest in peace, dear husband, father, and friend. You will forever be cherished, and your memory will live on in the lives you touched.
